1.1. What is Racer?
From the Racer homepage at
www.Racer.nl:

Racer is a free car simulation project, using real car physics to get a realistic feeling. Cars, tracks, scenes and such can be created with relative simplicity in mind (compared to other driving simulations). The 3D and other file formats are, or should be, documented. Editors and support programs are also available to get a very flexible and expandable simulator. It uses OpenGL for rendering.

Racer is the work of Ruud van Gaal, a professional programmer who codes in his spare time. Be warned that this is not a finished, polished sim - there's no AI, no multiplayer, and the physics and graphics engines are still being added to and debugged with each new release. Many options and variables are stored in plain text .ini files - don't be scared to have a rummage and see what you can find!

1.2. What's it look like? Got any screenies?
Racer's car and track models are the work of the Racer community, based here on High Gear. Quality varies considerably, so check the screenies and make up your own mind how good things look.

1.4. Minimum / Recommended PC configuration
Minimum
- A Windows (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP) Pentium II or newer machine, anything from 200Mhz and up will probably do (Pentium I not supported).
- 3D Graphic card with OpenGL driver support (version 1.1 or better)
- DirectX8.0 or better. Actually, for NT4, only DINPUT8.dll seems to be needed; copy this file from another computer into the Racer installation directory (thanks to Rob Anderson for providing this information).
- A TCP/IP network protocol driver (you more than likely have this already).

1.5. Quickstart Guide for the Computer Literate (Windows)
The latest version of Racer is
v0.5.0 final (10 meg).

Windows users: Download, install, then run config.exe to select graphics and controller options, and you're away.

Try the Racer homepage for info on Linux, Mac OS X and SGI Irix versions (Uwe's Linux FAQ is here)

1.6. Updating Racer 0.5.0
You'll probably want to download some new tracks and some better handling (and looking) cars.
Racer-Xtreme is a great place to start - here you'll find Stecki's Nissan 350Z (one of the best car models made for any sim on any platform) as well as over 100 other cars and a over 30 tracks. Installation is straightforward - Racer will automatically pick up on folders in the cars/ and tracks/ directories

1.7. Racer version tag
Since beta 6 of Racer v0.50, car.ini (car.version entry) and track.ini use tag to check ini compatibility. If you don't have the correct version tag, car or track will no longer be accepted until updated.

Current tag version
no tag : All version before 0.50 beta 6
050b6 : Racer version 0.50 beta 6/7/8/9/10/11/12/13 + v0.5.0 final

A version string looks as follows: '050b6' (without the single quotes). A final version is indicated like '049f'. Alpha versions can be identified like '050a1'. A simple string comparison can then check whether the car is acceptable.

Note that a '050b6' car will work in versions beyond just that one, as long as no incompatible constructs are introduced. If this happens, then the minimal version string will be upgraded to say '050b8' and the '050b6' car will no longer be accepted until updated. I intend to keep incompatibilities to a minimum, ofcourse.
